Game 5 Review: Over The Top

Auburn 49  Mississippi State 10.  Wow.  I thought Auburn would win this game but was not expecting them to play that well.  You just see the same thing so much that you are pretty surprised at any change.  I give Gus Malzahn a pretty hard time on this blog for his philosophy and his play calling but I will give him credit for this game.  The whole team was ready to play and State is no pushover.  I, as always, still have some advice for Gus and it is that like it or not the offense's strength is passing the ball and you better deal with it or Auburn will blow a winnable game or a chance of knocking off Georgia or Bama.  With that said...

THE GOOD
For the second week in a row the entire team gets in on this section...  Jarrett Stidham had his finest game to date going 13 of 16 for 264 yards and two touchdowns.  That is a pretty good day at the office.  He threw to eight different receivers with Eli Stove leading the way this week with 75 yards on two catches.  A shout out to Will Hastings for just using a State safety and getting open for a big touchdown.  Kerryon Johnson did most of the work on the ground rushing for over a hundred yards and three touchdowns.  This was all done on the backs of the offensive line who definitely had their best day pass blocking as Stidham had time to wait for those long patterns to develop.

Defensively Auburn held a decent State offense to 10 points.  This defense just has an energy I really like.  There is just a chemistry there you love to see.  These guys look like they are playing with reckless abandon and are having fun doing it.  Jeff Holland had another big sack.  As I said in my preseason post I thought Holland could have a breakout season and so far it looks like he is.  The Davis boys came to play.  Deshaun Davis led the team with 10 tackles, Javaris Davis had a pick six to seal it and Carlton Davis played his finest game this season with several great plays breaking up passes.  You just have to like the way these guys are getting after it.

THE BAD
It is hard to find much wrong with this game but you can look at bad trends over the season.  The bad trend I am referring to is not getting wide receivers Kyle Davis and Nate Craig-Myers more involved in the passing game.  So far all these guys are doing is blocking for the other guys.  Auburn runs plays to get Ryan Davis involved.  Why are we not running plays for these guys?  They are oozing talent and so far it has been wasted except for trying to get a deep ball to Davis in the first quarter of just about every game.  After that he is not seen much and Craig-Myers is not seen at all.  Auburn will not have the season it is capable of having without getting these guys much more involved.

THE UGLY
Once again the SEC overall is in this section.  Good grief the conference is really down.  Every week it is another batch of embarrassing losses or near losses.  This week LSU was the ugliest losing to Troy (State) at home.  That whole "Death Valley at night" thing really loses its luster when you are losing to Troy there.  Next up is Tennessee who was annihilated by Georgia 41-0 in Knoxville.  I mean OUCH.  I think the Butch Jones watch has officially begun.  I do not think he comes back from this one.  Finally you have Kentucky just squeaking by Eastern Michigan.  The key fact here is that this is not just a fluky bad week for the SEC but again this stuff is happening every week.

THE LAST WORD
It is never as simple as it looks but the seas are parting for Auburn right now.  Again it will not be easy and college teams can play great one day and terrible the next but Auburn will now be heavily favored in its next four games against Ole Miss, at LSU, at Arkansas and finally at Texas A&M after a bye week.  It is there for the taking to set up a huge Amen Corner end to the season against Georgia and Bama at home.  For the moment lets just enjoy this game for a day or so.  Auburn played a great game and definitely got the last word on State with freshman Malik Willis taking it to the house on a 67 yard run for Auburn's last touchdown and freshman Markaviest "Big Kat" Bryant ending the game with a sack.  I look forward to heading down to the plains next week for my first game in person and seeing if these Tigers can keep it going.

The Fall of a Hero and a Dark Day for Auburn

RIP Auburn Basketball 1905-2017

There are a lot of bad things going on around the world today.  I am certainly not going to say this is one of the worst but for the Auburn family it is pretty bad.  Chuck Person, the greatest player in Auburn basketball history and current assistant coach, was charged today with corruption in a sworn complaint from the FBI and arrested on federal charges.  Person is facing six charges, including bribery conspiracy, solicitation of bribes and gratuities, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and travel act conspiracy, according to court documents. If found guilty, Person could face a maximum of 80 years in prison.

It feels like a gut punch to me personally.  I have maintained on this web site that Person not Charles Barkley is Auburn's greatest player.  He was my hero when it came to Auburn basketball.  I remember watching, recording and re-watching the 1985 SEC Tournament final where Auburn and Person beat Bama for the title.  I remember the NCAA runs to the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight.  I remember Person's gorgeous shot, one of the prettiest I have ever seen.  I remember his NBA time with the Indiana Pacers.  I was so happy when he came back to Auburn to assist Bruce Pearl.  You knew he would be the heir apparent to be head coach after Pearl left.

Chuck Person could have been one of the leaders in turning Auburn basketball around... and now he is the one who has delivered the killing stroke.  Auburn basketball was just about dead when Bruce Pearl and Person arrived as I have detailed many times in this blogNow it is definitely over for this cursed program, finished off by its greatest player.  I mean...  it just leaves you speechless.  These egregious acts will of course also take down head coach Bruce Pearl and probably end his career.  The players involved are done in college.  The university is left with a giant black eye and the collateral damage will probably effect all sports at Auburn in some degree even football.

Finally, no good basketball coach in his right mind will ever get near Auburn again after this monumental disaster.  It is as simple as bad things happen to basketball players and coaches at Auburn.  The history speaks for itself.  I knew well about this curse and again have documented it several times on this blog but Chuck Person being charged by the FEDS???  I did not see that coming.  I mean this is ridiculous even for Auburn basketball.  This just goes beyond what you think about Gus Malzahn or how you feel about the football team.  This is the fall of a hero and a very dark day for Auburn University.

It is really hard to swallow.  I just do not understand it.  WHY???  The guy played in the NBA, coached under Phil Jackson and again would have most likely gotten the head coaching job at Auburn when Pearl left.  WHY???  I know that college basketball is the sleaziest college sport behind the scenes but this was definitely beyond the scope of any normal shadowy recruiting.  In fact this was not about recruiting at all but just about illegally getting more money.  WHY???  Person makes a good salary and has made a good one for a long time.  I just do not understand it.  The guy was Auburn's greatest player and maybe could have been one of Auburn's greatest coaches.

Person's name will now live in infamy in Auburn.  The incredible things he did will be forgotten and he will only be remembered as a criminal and the man who finished off the basketball program.  I am at a loss for words on how to finish this post.  This guy was one of my heroes at Auburn.  I thought he was one of the all-time greats.  He has now destroyed his life and career.  He has probably destroyed other peoples careers.  He has destroyed his accomplishments and legacy.  Forgiveness and redemption are always possible but they will not stop the consequences of these crimes.  They will be felt around Auburn for a long time.

I mean when your greatest basketball player kills his own program and goes down an infamy... when college football has become little more than a hate fest and also includes rampant cheating... when your leadership shows their incompetence again and again and nothing is done till the bottom drops out if then...  what is the point of it all?

Game 4 Review: Foregone Conclusion

Auburn 51  Missouri 14.  This score seemed a foregone conclusion after seeing how Missouri's season opened and man they were even worse than I thought.  This team despite coach Barry Odom's epic rant after the game is really bad and sorry Barry they did not look well coached.  Missouri just made mistake after mistake from penalties to turnovers to just bad calls.  They are now the worst team in the conference and that is saying something this season.  Auburn played well and that was nice to see but it was disappointing to see Auburn return to the standard Gus Malzahn run-heavy game plan.

Last week Auburn threw almost 40 passes against Mercer and it looked like there might be a scrap of hope that Gus would let Chip Lindsey balance the offense some.  I should have known better.  This game Auburn went back to the standard Malzahn game plan for these type of games.  Run them over and throw over the top a few times.  Another disappointing part was not getting true freshman and current backup quarterback Malik Willis any meaningful snaps.  He just doesn't seem to have any kind of plan for taking the second half of these routs to help certain players get better.  Meanwhile over in Nashville Bama toward the end of a worse rout used the time to get their freshman backup quarterback better.

I do not mean to sound so negative after a big win but it looked a lot like the big wins over Mississippi State and Arkansas last season.  We won big, we destroyed the lesser team but we did not get better.  We were still not prepared for Georgia and Bama.  We had no passing attack and we had not used garbage time to get our starting or backup quarterback ready. It just looked exactly the same...

THE GOOD
Well the whole team played pretty well.  On defense the Tigers finally allowed an opponent to break 300 total years but that was mostly toward the end of the game.  On offense even without the injured Kamryn Pettway running back Kerryon Johnson had five touchdowns and his relief Kam Martin added 74 yards on nine carries.  It really makes one wonder why Kam Martin did not have ONE carry the last two weeks (???).  Quarterback Jarrett Stidham had over 200 yards passing and a touchdown on just 17 attempts.  Wide receiver Nate Craig-Myers, whom I think could be the best wide receiver on the plains, led the team in receiving yards and caught the touchdown.

THE BAD
As I said earlier the Tigers from Missouri were simply awful last night. The racial strife from a few years ago has not only decimated the football team but the university as a whole as enrollment has dropped 35% in the last two years.  It was sad to watch last night as the stadium was practically empty as the second half started.  The night then concluded with head coach Barry Odom going on a rant about how turnarounds work and that he is the man to do it.  All in all it was an ugly night in Columbia, Missouri for the home team.  It looks it will get worse the next few weeks with road trips to Kentucky and Georgia.

THE UGLY
It was another ugly week for the SEC in addition to Missouri.  The Volunteers barely beat a winless UMass team at home and South Carolina got very lucky to pull past Louisiana Tech in the last seconds.  LSU had trouble with Syracuse at home and Florida needed another miracle to win against Kentucky.  I have been extremely surprised that Coach Jim McElwain has not been able to get the Gators really going.  Vandy came back down to earth as did Mississippi State.  Right now it looks like it will be Bama vs. Georgia in Atlanta.  Auburn has the talent to be right there with their two biggest rivals but...

THE LAST WORD
It all comes down to the Auburn coaches.  They will most likely continue running the exact same game plan they employed this week.  That will not cut it against Georgia and Bama and will most likely get them upset somewhere else as well.  The degree of difficulty goes up some this week against State even considering their performance Saturday.  It will be a big first step for Auburn toward their final reckoning at the end of the season.

Game 3 Review: Hangover

Auburn 24  Mercer 10.  There was obviously going to be a hangover after that awful Clemson loss but this one was worse than usual.  However shockingly I do not come to bury Gus this week (even though he still deserves it) but to say that this game was actually the most positive game I have seen in I do not know how long.  SOMETHING ACTUALLY CHANGED.  I have been nauseated by the constant talk of who is calling plays this season and last.  I mean if you are using same playbook and same run/pass ratio IT DOES NOT MATTER who is calling the plays.  However finally something actually changed yesterday and it was the run/pass ratio.

I have watched every single game of the Gus Malzahn era as I have seen or listened to just about every Auburn game since the late 1970s.  I believe I can safely say Malzahn has never thrown over 30 passes in a low-tier non-conference game and has never thrown over 30 passes in any game that Auburn was not behind in except the 2014 Iron Bowl.  That in-and-of itself made me happy.  I remarked to a friend this week that watching Auburn under Malzahn is like watching the same movie 40 times.  You know how every game is going to go and the exact run/pass ratio.  Finally FINALLY I cannot say that about yesterday's game!!!

THE GOOD
Of course I have to mention the defense first.  I still think this Auburn defense like last season is susceptible to a good passing team but luckily for Auburn there are not many of those in the SEC.  With that said, I was impressed with Mercer.  I thought they were a good well-coached team.  I thought they did a great job the entire game.  They are inferior to Auburn but you keep giving them turnovers like Auburn did and any defense could give up some big plays.  Auburn did not and held the Bear offense under 300 yards just like the last two games.

Next again a GUS MALZAHN TEAM THREW THE BALL 37 TIMES IN A GAME AGAINST MERCER (!!!!!!).  I am telling you THAT in and of itself is amazing regardless of how bad everything was in the game yesterday.  First though if we are that terrified of our head coach calling plays then should he be head coach?  With that said, yesterday's game has been the first and only indication that Malzahn has allowed another person to change our offense.  Yes a lot of those pass plays were basically running plays but Stidham still threw downfield a good bit.  I know we still have a bunch of offensive problems but I have to rejoice in this actual change in philosophy.

THE BAD
The worst part about yesterday's game was seeing offensive tackle Darius James injured and carted off the field.  Our prayers here are with him and his family.  I sure hope he is OK along with the referee that was hurt in the game as well.  I hope the Auburn athletics department has the character to give the Auburn family a true report on him when it is OK with his family and not play games in a situation like this.  I know most Auburn fans remember Zac Etheridge whenever they see a player carted off the field.  We remember that it is not always precautionary and the player could really be hurt bad.  I know I take these times much more seriously after that day in 2010.

The rest of the bad was obviously not near as important as a player health.  It consisted of new and old problems on offense.  A new problem was the turnover bugaboo.  I mean WOW.  Auburn had four fumbles lost and an interception.  The old problems were Stidham holding the ball too long and the wide receivers not getting open when they were not fumbling.  I am sorry I love Kodi Burns.  He is good guy and an Auburn man but he is completely unqualified to be wide receiver coach at this level and was only hired because of his relationship with Malzahn.  I hate it but we really need an experienced wide receivers coach.

THE UGLY
The Southeastern Conference STINKS.  Bama should really get some checkmarks against them for their pathetically easy schedule.  I think the SEC is the worst of the Power 5 conferences.  The top three in every other conference are way better than the SEC.  There is Bama and... nobody.  The SEC is terrible.  Look at the evidence... we have seen Auburn struggle the last two weeks.  The other top team in the conference was supposed to be LSU who got run off the field by Mississippi State last night.  Congrats to the Bulldogs but I still do not think they are a powerhouse either.

The rest of the conference continues to get beat by the other Power 5 conferences as well.  We have already seen Michigan crush Florida, TCU stomp Arkansas and the UCLA team that got beat by Memphis yesterday beat Texas A&M.  The Aggies have also struggled the last two weeks against inferior opponents.  Purdue crushed Missouri yesterday (Purdue?) and Cal took down Ole Miss.  Vandy did upset Kansas State and there have been a few big wins in previous weeks like Georgia over Notre Dame but overall it is obvious that the SEC is just not very good.  It of course will not matter as the national media love worshipping at $aban's throne but it should.

THE LAST WORD
It is truly gut wrenching to see how bad Auburn has played on offense because like I wrote in my preseason post the opportunity is there.  Auburn has the players and the schedule to still make a real run at the conference championship.  I like Auburn over Missouri and Ole Miss and still like the Tigers over State at home.  I think Auburn will lose at LSU because historically that is what always happens but as I keep saying over and over LSU quarterback Danny Etling gives every team a chance against the Bayou Tigers.  He was awful in another big game last night at Mississippi State.  Road trips to Fayetteville and College Station will be tough for Auburn no matter how bad those teams look but the Tigers should be favored in both.

Auburn then has top rivals Georgia and Bama at home.  On top of that I still like Stidham and the wide receiver talent a lot.  I love our defense and again I think throwing 37 passes last night is the most positive thing I have seen from the offense in years.  The problems are of course the offensive coaching, these guys are what they are.  I am not sure how much we can improve and to make it worse it is obvious Kamryn Pettway is hurt.  I hear he has plantar fasciitis and I know that injury well.  It does not heal quickly.  Auburn is in a bit of trouble with Kerryon out for a long time and Pettway hobbled especially when the coaches decided not to give ONE other running back a SINGLE carry (???).  I just do not understand why the coaches will not use Kam Martin more.  It is very possible the season could come to rest on his shoulders.

Game 2 Review: OFFENSIVE, PART 2

Clemson 14  Auburn 6.  I wrote the original "OFFENSIVE" post about Auburn's game against Clemson last season.  In honor of the worst offensive passing coach I have ever seen who just keeps doing the same stupid things over and over again I guess I will follow his lead and just write the same thing I wrote last season:

"Wow.  I mean WOW.  I had already come to the conclusion that Gus Malzahn can only coach one way and is incapable of change but last night he even surprised me in how bad the team looked offensively.  In fact I have chosen the word "offensive" to be the theme of this review because our offense is in a word... offensive.  Here is part of the dictionary definition:
OFFENSIVE:
1
:  of or relating to an attempt to score in a game or contest; also :  of or relating to a team in possession of the ball or puck
2
:  giving painful or unpleasant sensations :  nauseous, obnoxious
3
:  causing displeasure or resentment

I can say for sure that watching the Auburn offense flounder around last night was "giving a painful or unpleasant sensations".  It made me "nauseous" and it certainly caused "displeasure" and "resentment".  I have seen a LOT of bad offenses in my 40+ years of cheering for Auburn but I do not think I have ever seen..." a worse job coaching an offense.

I mean the totals jump off the page at you:  117 YARDS TOTAL OFFENSE AND 11 SACKS.  Gus Malzahn is literally the worst passing game coach I have ever seen.  I have said it over and over and over again in this blog but I guess Auburn will continue to pay this guy FIVE MILLION dollars a year no matter how many time he embarrasses us.  The list just continues to grow:

1.  The complete meltdown in 2014 after losing to Texas A&M at home which led into the huge conference losing streak at home in 2015 and into 2016.

2.  The complete embarrassment against Clemson last season where we had like five different people play quarterback including our fullback plus the idiotic trick plays and horrible blocking.

3.  The utter embarrassment at Georgia last season where they beat us with one defensive touchdown and only gaining 60 yards and one first down in the second half of that game and the first half against Bama.

4.  Losing to Georgia and Bama for three consecutive seasons but it is not just the losing but the extraordinary bad coaching in the games against Georgia where we were the better team the last two seasons and getting absolutely blown out in 2014 plus the absolute rollovers for Bama where we were not even competitive especially on the offensive side of the ball.

You can now add last night's performance to this list.  How long is this going to go on?  However now that I think about it, maybe it is better just to let Gus go on than to let that incompetent boob of an athletic director hire another coach.  Contrary to the popular cheer, it is not that great to be an Auburn Tiger right now during the seemingly interminable reign of Jay Jacobs and Gus Malzahn. I am so tired of watching Jay Jacobs and Gus Malzahn embarrass Auburn at every turn.  I am so tired of watching the Gus Malzahn offense.  I am so tired of having to write the same thing over and over.  This guy will never change no matter who is offensive coordinator or how many times he embarrasses himself.

Well let me stick to format and go to "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" from last night (it is eerily similar to the "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" from the Clemson game last season)...

THE GOOD
Obviously this is the defense.  Wouldn't you know it?  Auburn fields" another good defense "and the offense hits rock bottom when we have a supposed offensive coach.  You cannot make this stuff up.  As I write this I am just shaking my head...  back to last night though.  Auburn played" a great defensive game holding Clemson to 14 points in their home stadium.  "Those guys played their guts out and they kept Auburn in the game till the end.  They continually got stops and gave it back to the offense in good field position.

The defensive line got the best of Clemson's veteran offensive line most of the night" except for two drives.  "With that said though Auburn still held" a great offense "to way below their usual output in every phase of the game.  The Auburn defense held Clemson to" under 300 yards total offense "and most importantly they held Clemson to just" 14 points.

Auburn should win any game... with those defensive stats.  It is completely unacceptable to lose when the defense is playing that well.  Clemson" made some big plays "but overall the Auburn defense got the job done.  There is no way they were going to completely shut down Clemson.  It just makes Auburn's pathetic offense look that much worse.  I saw good defensive play from all of the Auburn defense last night... You can nit pick some details but the defense got it done, the offense on the other hand was...".

(Everything in quotes above I wrote last season in the post for this game)

THE BAD AND THE UGLY
Unlike the crazy stuff he did last season in this game with the quarterback rotation he just straight stunk last night.  He continued his numerous uncreative runs up the middle even when it was obvious it would not work against Clemson and that Pettway was not 100%.  He showed again that regardless who is offensive coordinator and who is at quarterback if they are not a real runner that he cannot even install a high school grade passing game.  I think most of the big high schools in the state do a better job.

I mean it is every phase of the passing attack that stinks:  the blocking, the routes, the reads, etc...  Every phase of the passing attack is badly coached.  It is just incredible to me that it could be so bad but it is not really surprising at all, again back to this game last season...

"Again Gus Malzahn has averaged being a 7-5 as a head coach and coordinator at Auburn outside of 2010 and 2013.  He is looking to hit right on that from where I sit.  As for his long term viability as Auburn head coach, other than defending his awesome game plan he also made his favorite reference and that is to call Auburn a "run-based play-action offense".  It is obvious now in year four that being a "run-based play-action offense" is all we will ever be under Malzahn.  He has pretty much shown he is unwilling and incapable of changing his offensive philosophy at all.

The only way he can be successful is to have the personnel to run his shotgun Wing-T offense like he did in 2013.  He has proven he can NOT be successful any other way.  Therefore from this vantage point I do not think he will be very successful the rest of his career at Auburn because I do not see the stars aligning personnel-wise like they did in 2013 anytime soon.  Malzhan has the rest of this season to prove me wrong but after last night's offensive showing things do not look promising.  As I have written in this blog many times, the problems started in 2014 but his offense last season and now to start this season is simply offensive to anyone who believes in a balanced offense and a competent passing game."

THE LAST WORD
So to sum it up...  This season will be like every other Malzahn season other than 2013. His offense only looks good when Auburn is playing a team they can run on. It always has been that way especially on that big six game winning streak last season we had to hear about over and over. Lucky for Gus the SEC is terrible so we are about to go on a four game winning streak because we can run on all those teams and the same old people will be back positive.

We will probably finish 9-3 if we can run on Georgia or 8-4 if we cannot and get a decent bowl game and he will keep his job. We then will start this whole cycle again with everyone thinking we are almost there and that the offense is going to change. It will not and we will continue to lose to the 3 or 4 teams on our schedule that can stop the run but look great against the ones we can run on. I mean this is the fourth year of this! Nothing surprising happened last night. This all was also true in 2013 but we had a once-in-a-lifetime team who could run on anybody as the season progressed.

So lets get fired up about the upcoming four game winning streak over Mercer, Missouri and the Mississippi schools before the inevitable meltdown in Baton Rouge.

Game 1 Review: Uneven Start

Auburn 41  Georgia Southern 7.  The end results were good but as this post is titled it was a very uneven start for the Auburn football Tigers.  The defense was very good but the offense was not.  The offense made some good plays but it did not really play well overall.  Auburn would have probably lost if they had played anyone any good last night.  The quarterback was rusty, the offensive line missed blocks, the running backs made mistakes and the wide receivers had trouble getting open.  All of this resulted in sacks and turnovers.  One of those turnovers resulted in Georgia Southern's only touchdown.  The offense came back and pounded Georgia Southern into submission but that game plan will not work next week.

The coaches have some serious work to do this week to get ready for a road trip to the defending national champion Clemson Tigers.  I had thought all summer Auburn had a really good chance to beat Clemson but after watching last night that seems like wishful thinking.  Auburn did throw the ball a little more and you can see Jarrett Stidham's talent but it is still the Malzahn offense.  You cannot build a good passing offense in one offseason if they are even trying to do that.  Stidham is still rusty and the wide receivers overall were awful.  That all added up to a Sean White-esque passing performance for Stidham who went 14 of 24 for 185 yards with two touchdowns, one interception and two fumbles with one taken back for a touchdown.

That will definitely be one of the entries below as we look at the good, the bad and the ugly from last night and this past week...

THE GOOD
The Auburn defense came out well prepared and fired up.  I mean WOW.  These guys were awesome.  It was by far the best thing to watch all night.  I have not been the biggest fan of coach Kevin Steele but he and the defensive coaches did an outstanding job getting these boys ready to play.  You can also see the leadership from the veteran players and the desire of the younger players.  Yes it was just Georgia Southern but again you could tell this unit was well prepared and fired up and that is what you want to see regardless of the opponent.  Georgia Southern only had 78 yards total offense (!!!).  That is a historic performance against anybody.

The Tiger's front four absolutely dominated the line of scrimmage while the back seven feasted on anyone who escaped.  There were blue jerseys swarming to the ball.  This defense will still probably show they miss Carl Lawson and Montravius Adams but they did not last night.  Georgia Southern was 0 for 15 on third downs (!!!).  Their poor quarterback spent most of the night running for his life.  Auburn completely shutdown every facet of the triple option and Georgia Southern did not even try to throw the ball.  On top of all that good news I did not notice any injuries on the defensive side.  Clemson better watch out because they are about to run into a buzzsaw with this defense.  Win or lose they are going to be beat up when they head to Louisville in week three.

THE BAD
However the problem is their defense might do worse to Auburn's offense if they do not get a LOT of things corrected.  The offense did run well as all Malzahn teams do against lesser teams.  The problem is this group will not run over Clemson.  You have to have a more balanced offense to beat better teams and that is why Gus Malzahn has not beaten anyone good for awhile.  You do have to give credit to the coaches and the players for their run prowness though.  The Auburn offensive line cleared the way for 350 yards rushing and over 500 yards of total offense against the overmatched Eagles from Georgia Southern.

Kerryon Johnson absolutely dominated with 136 yards and a big touchdown on 16 carries before he got hurt... again.  Sigh.  Johnson is really starting to look like he will be one of those guys who are just injury prone.  I do not think he will be back in any kind of top shape for Clemson.  It looks like Kam Martin will move into his spot backing up Kamryn Pettway when he returns hopefully next week.  Martin who I thought should have been much more involved in the offense last season finally showed what he can do by putting up the exact same numbers as Kerryon.  He got the job done running inside and out.  Again as I have said before I also think both of these guys could make a big impact as receivers as well.

That is what the offense did good, the bad part of the night was the passing game and the offseason conduct of some players.  The stats came out all right but I think everyone knows this passing performance would not have got it done against a good team.  Stidham started rusty, held the ball too long all night and also threw some bad passes.  He will get better but will this offense let him even come close to his potential?  It does not look like it in my opinion.  Of course it sure does not help when his wide receivers could not get open and dropped balls.  I have read many people criticizing the receivers last night but in my opinion that comes down to coaching.  It must be better.  It also does not explain why the coaches did not get Nate Craig-Myers even one catch on the night.

Will Hastings and Ryan Davis are nice gutty gamers who you want on your team but it is guys like Kyle Davis and Craig-Myers that championships are won with.  Of course some of the blames goes on Kyle Davis for the mistakes he made over the offseason to get him suspended along with supposed team leaders Kamryn Pettway and Sean White.  All I have heard is how important football is to Pettway yet he gets suspended for the opener of the most important season of his career?  I have also heard what a great leader Sean White is yet he gets suspended for the opener?  This is absolutely unacceptable from some of the best players on the team and the backup quarterback.  Of course he might not be the backup long if the coaches keep allowing Stidham to run the ball.

THE UGLY
Auburn's athletic director and head coach have said they believe in certain morals and ethics and to be clear we all make mistakes.  We have all lied many times in our lives when we should not have.  I sure have.  I think most everybody understands this however when these men who represent Auburn University publicly lie in such a brazen matter it is really ugly.  We all knew when softball assistant coach Corey Myers left the team in such an abrupt manner that something bad happened.  However athletic director Jay Jacobs chose to just outright lie and denied any investigation into Myers conduct.

I understand privacy laws and the sensitive nature of the allegations made however that simply does not give Jacobs the license to lie about it.  All he has to say is "no comment" or "I cannot discuss it".  Will that turn into more probing by the media?  Yes it will but that is going to happen anyway sooner or later.  It certainly did in this case.  All you do is damage your character and your credibility by lying to the media.  I have no great love for the media but you talk to the Auburn family through the media so you are also lying to us.

As I have posted many times, I think Jay Jacobs has done a terrible job and is completely unqualified to be athletic director.  He has once again proven that to be the case with his handling of this entire softball scandal.  You just have to be a real moron to bungle this so badly after what has happened at Penn State and Baylor.  This entire thing proves once again that the Auburn athletic department needs some real cleaning up especially at the top.  Unfortunately neither the Auburn president or board want to get involved in athletics anymore so Jacobs can apparently screw up as much as he wants with no repercussions.

Unfortunately Jacobs was not alone publicly lying to the media.  There have been rumors of football suspensions for weeks.  It is only natural that Malzahn would be asked about it.  He then just flat out lied stating on Tuesday that there were no suspensions and "everybody" was expected to play.  He said that knowing that Davis, Pettway and White would be suspended.  I understand gamesmanship and not showing your hand but this is crossing the line.  Once again you are not just lying the media but to all of us.  You can simply say "no comment" and earn that FIVE MILLION DOLLARS you are making by manning up and dealing with any follow up questions.  This is not the first time Malzahn has done it and probably will not be the last.  You know what that makes you Gus?  A LIAR.  That means a person that does not mess up and tell one here and there but a person who habitually plans to lie.

THE LAST WORD
I enjoyed seeing the season start and watching Auburn football again but Gus Malzahn has sure gone a long way to dampen that enthusiasm.  He not only lies to the fans but will not do anything for the fans and treats them with loathing and disrespect.  He will not release scrimmage stats ever when even king $aban in Tuscaloosa will do it.  He basically lets the media, and through them all of us, only watch 15 minutes of warm ups.  THE NFL DOES MORE THAN THAT.  He then talked this week about no longer releasing depth charts because he cannot be bothered about all the questions they bring up.  He simply treats the media, and by extension the Auburn family, as enemies but expects them to show up on Saturdays and support him.

I love Auburn and I wear the ring but I have simply had it with this treatment from the highest paid employee of Auburn University.  It is simply unacceptable.  Yes some of the media and some of the fans can be very bad people but I do not believe it is anywhere close to a majority.  Tommy Tuberville used to start training camp on the Auburn intramural fields where everybody could watch.  The media and fans got to see two weeks of basic football training.  It was awesome.  We got to talk about this player and that looking great or that coach chewing somebody out.  Did he close it down for game week?  Yes he did but before that he gave back to the fans.  I hate to tell you Gus but your offense is as predictable as snow in Antarctica.  It is not going to hurt you to open up a few practices.

OK I got all that out, the countdown now starts toward another battle of Tigers in Death Valley next week.  It is one of the biggest games of the year for both teams.  As I said in my last post, it is an incredible opportunity for this team to make a big statement this season.

Auburn 2017 Preview: Opportunity Just Ahead

I always think a bit about the title of my posts.  In my experience many times something will just pop into my head that really describes how I feel about a certain subject or game.  It did not take long for this post.  I cannot think of a better way to describe this upcoming season than an "opportunity just ahead".  It is a huge opportunity for the Auburn football Tigers.  College football is about patiently waiting for things to line up and your team to have a real shot at a championship.  This is true for just about every program except those who can finish #1 in recruiting for a decade where any shady stuff done is ignored.  It is like a surfer waiting for that perfect wave to come in.

It takes a lot of things to line up on your football team.  First, you have to have a good quarterback.  Next you have to be pretty good everywhere else as well.  You have to be very good in the trenches.  You have to have some big-time playmaking running backs and wide receivers.   You have to be at least very solid in the back seven on defense with some veteran guys that have a nose for the football.  You have to have very good special teams play especially your kicker.  You need to have a good group of juniors and seniors that really help lead the team in the right direction.  Finally you need good coaching to put these players in the best position to succeed.

It takes a lot of things to line up on your schedule.  You need the right tough games at home.  You need your tough games spaced out decently.  You need your home and road games spaced out decently as well.  You need your open week in the right place.  It also helps to pick up a weaker conference foe in your rotating spot and for a couple of your regular conference foes to be hitting a bit of a dip.  For a lot of teams you need some good breaks on what happens around the country.  Finally you have to avoid injuries and get that lucky bounce of the ball at the right time during the season that every single championship team in the history of sports has gotten.

The 2017 Auburn Tiger football team appears to have a lot of these things lining up for it.  That is certainly no guarantee but it is much better than the years where none of these things are happening.  Unfortunately that has been true of Auburn for much of this decade.  Auburn simply had no chance to compete for a championship in 2011, 2012, 2015 and in 2016.  The best the team could hope for was a big regular season win or two and a good bowl game those years.  Auburn did get a few decent wins during some of those years and even got a good bowl or two but lost to Georgia and Bama all of them.  Unfortunately that overshadows everything else.

Back to the present, lets take a look at the team.  I said first you have to have a good quarterback and Auburn finally seems to have one in Baylor transfer Jarrett Stidham.  Stidham did more at Baylor in three games (against good teams) than Sean White did in an entire season.  This included a 400 yard passing game against Kansas State.  Anyone who thinks it is easy to throw for 400 yards in pretty much any game between Power 5 schools is misguided.  Stidham also looked great at Auburn's A-day scrimmage and threw some beautiful passes.  People will scoff at that but all of the Auburn quarterbacks looked awful at A-day the previous two springs especially in 2016.

None of this is a guarantee for success however when you have to change to a new quarterback you want the best prospect possible and I think Auburn has that.  Next Auburn has to be good in the trenches and it appears they are.  I do not think the Auburn offensive line will be as good as 2013 or even 2010 but they can be a very good line.  A good line starts with the tackles and that is the best part of this line as well with seniors Braden Smith and Darius James.  Smith has been a beast for four years and Darius James came to Auburn looking like the perfect tackle and got a full season of experience last year.  This could be his breakout season.  I think both of these guys will play on Sundays.

With that said, as camp has gone on the rumors have gotten stronger that Prince Tega Wanogho is making a run at left tackle.  I am glad that he is maybe good enough to be an SEC left tackle as we will need one next season but I am a little leery of making this move.  Wanogho has no game experience at all and he is going to take over the most important position on the line?  (Yes I think left tackle is still the most important position on the line with a right-handed quarterback).  I like James and Smith at the tackles better.  I guess starting Wanogho would allow Braden Smith to move back to his more natural guard spot but again I like the experienced seniors at the tackles.

At the guards if James and Smith stay the tackles, it looks like there will be two redshirt sophomores in Mike Horton and Marquel Harrell.  These guys do not have the experience but they look like great prospects and will be surrounded with good veteran experience.  That brings us to center where senior Austin Golson will anchor the line.  He also got a full season of experience last year at center.  It looks like a good line with talented seniors in the right places.  The only big deficiency here is depth.  The only thing behind these guys are a lot of unknown inexperienced young guys and transfers.  Transfers are always tricky the first year.  I do not think Auburn can win a championship without Smith and James staying healthy even if Wanogho starts at left tackle.

On the defensive side of the ball things are kind of opposite but still good.  I do not think Auburn has a standout dominant lineman but has a lot of good solid players.  Many have tabbed defensive end Marlon Davidson a star but while he was very good last season as a freshman I do not see a dominant pass rusher like others do.  He is very good and will start at one end while it looks like Jeff Holland will start at the other.  Holland came in a very high rated recruit and has gotten a lot of experience the last two seasons.  I think he is another player that could have a breakout season.  Other players in the mix at end will be Paul James and Nick Coe plus incoming freshman Markaviest Bryant.

It looks like it will be Dontavius Russell and either Andrew Williams or Derrick Brown at tackle.  These all seem to be good solid players and will have Byron Cowart backing up one of the positions and a lot of young guys that have been redshirted adding depth.  Again I do not think this is a great line but there is some talent and depth and hopefully that can wear some teams down.  Coach Rodney Garner has done a good job using his depth in the past and getting a lot of guys involved.  Hopefully he can keep it up and push all the right buttons to get the most out of this group.

We now come to playmakers on offense.  This appears to be one of the strongest if not the strongest part of the team IF Gus Malzahn can at least let Chip Lindsey build a high school level passing offense as compared to the middle school one Auburn has tried to run the last two seasons being completely exposed against anybody any good.  Auburn has only passed with Malzahn as coach against either bad teams or when they are running at will.  Anybody can pass in those situations.  Exhibit A being Auburn playing an entire game last season between the second half against Georgia and the first half against Bama where the Tigers only had one first down and 60 yards offense.

Things will start with Kamryn Pettway who established himself as another member of Auburn's proud history of elite running backs.  He rumbled for over 1200 yards while basically playing only eight or so games.  Pettway will be the foundation of the offense and I am fine with that IF again Auburn shows a little more balance and they do not injure the guy again.  I love all the Auburn writers at other sites blaming the Georgia loss on the Pettway injury.  It is still Gus Malzahn's fault as he way overused Pettway especially in blowout wins over State and Arkansas.  The coaches must do a better job of mixing the other running backs in.

Next on the list for me with running backs is the issue of the unbelievable underwhelming use of Kerryon Johnson.  Kerryon is not a great between the tackles runner, he can do it but to me it is a waste and he will probably get hurt.  Kerryon is the Reggie Bush to Pettway's Lendale White.  Kerryon should be used like Bush was.  Kerryon is already a proven playmaker.  Get him the ball in space, use him much more in the passing attack and find other ways to get him the ball.  I would also use him on punts like Carnell Williams did.  I think a good offensive mind and coordinator would be able to get a lot more out of a tremendous talent like Kerryon Johnson.  I believe this is another place that might be the difference between a championship and just another decent season.

Along those same lines is blazing Kam Martin.  I thought Auburn could have gotten Martin a ton more experience in the many blowout wins Auburn had last season.  However Gus never uses the second half of a blowout to get any better.  He just keeps handing off and slogs to an Ambien finish.  A good coach would use those times to get up and coming players quality time.  It is not unsportsmanlike to throw a swing pass or two to a 3rd or 4th string running back!  This season that time should be used to develop Malik Miller and a quality backup to Chandler Cox.  Kam Martin should be important piece to every big game plan this year.  I think he could make some big plays.

Finally we come to the receivers and tight ends.  I will start with the tight ends.  I have heard a lot of blather about getting the ball more to Jalen Harris and newcomer Sal Cannella.  Usually I would agree with that but with the amount of good wide receivers we have I think they should be the main priority.  Unfortunately I also think Harris and the unproven Cannella are one of the biggest weak spots on this team.  They are not anywhere close to C.J. Uzomah and Brandon Fulse who were the last good tight ends at Auburn.  I just hope they can get their blocking duties done.  Toss a few to them to put it in people's heads but as little as Auburn passes the ball the wide receivers should come first.

I will say again how amazed I am that Auburn has these good wide receivers.  Auburn is a school where wide receiver stats go to die.  Auburn is probably the only Power 5 school in all of college football to only have two players have 1000 yards receiving seasons in its entire history.  Yet with all that said we are looking at one of the best wide receiver corps in the country.  Kudos again to former coach Dameyune Craig for helping bring most of these studs in.  The main guys this year will be: Nate Craig-Myers, Kyle Davis, Darius Slayton and Eli Stove plus steady senior Ryan Davis.  As I have said in game reviews from last season, these guys were criminally underused.

You can see the talent dripping off of them but they were stuck in Malzahn's Wing-T offense and his abysmal coaching in the passing game last season.  The receivers only hope this season is IF Chip Lindsey is a good coach and then IF Malzahn will let him build a passing game and actually use it at critical times.  I am not going to lie, I will have to see it to believe it.  It is proven that up till now Malzahn himself is simply incapable of building a good passing game.  He will run just Kamryn Pettway 30 times in a game but will never pass the ball 30 times.  Again Malzahn will not let 3rd stringers throw passes in the second half of blowouts.  He just does not get it.  You cannot get better passing the ball unless you do it every game and use little games and blowouts to get experience.  You cannot just turn it on and off like a light bulb.  Auburn will lose at least three games if the passing game is not changed and improved.

We change sides of the ball and look at the back seven on defense.  I remarked earlier that Auburn has to be at least very solid in the back seven on defense with some veteran guys that have a nose for the football.  I believe Auburn has that if injuries do not overwhelm them.  Auburn finally has an above average set of linebackers led by DeShaun Davis and Tre' Williams.  These guys have proven themselves and I believe are some of the top leaders on defense.  There also appears to be some decent depth around them but the Tigers really need these guys leading the way.

The secondary looks pretty good as well except maybe not as deep.  The mainstays will be: Carlton Davis, Javaris Davis, Tray Matthews, Stephen Roberts, Daniel Thomas, Nick Ruffin and Jamel Dean.  That is a lot of experienced players.  I hope they can stay healthy and finally put together that special season.  It has been a tough road through injuries and other things for these guys.  If the coaches can find some good consistent pass rushers I think this secondary could really make some big plays.  I know it is always like that but I really feel this unit could really bust out given the chance.  Again you wait for these years when it could all come together.

The final group is special teams.  Coach Tim Horton has inherited special teams coaching along with his usual running back duties after Coach Scott Fountain was relieved of his duties by Malzahn and moved to Georgia.  It seemed like Fountain had done a really good job.  I hope Coach Horton can do as good a job.  He will have the soon-to-be all-time leading scorer in Auburn history to help him in senior kicker Daniel Carlson.  Carlson might be Auburn's biggest asset overall.  The Tigers will certainly need his best again this season.  I believe Carlson could be the difference if Auburn plays well in several big games this season.  I think Auburn has the players to have good solid special teams, it is up to the coaches.

So there you have it, for the first time in awhile Auburn has a team capable of competing for and winning a championship.  They have the talent and also seem to have those junior and senior leaders that are needed as well.  The next question is the coaching.  This has been one of the biggest deficiencies on the team the last couple of seasons on offense.  I am tired of writing it but Auburn cannot win a championship without a good passing game.  It is just not going to happen.  Can Chip Lindsey and Jarrett Stidham finally fix this problem?  Will Malzahn let them?  Is he is even capable of letting a semi-balanced game plan be called on a team he is head coach of?  These are the biggest questions for Auburn this season.

Now to the schedule...  Auburn got a decent one but not a great one.  It could be better but first you have to remember Auburn can only compete for SEC titles in odd years since our awful athletic director ruined one of the best things about Auburn, i.e. having a great rival home game to end every season.  I am of course talking about his idiotic decision to change and let Georgia and Bama be both at home (odd years) or both away (even years).  It is so great on those even years when Jordan Hare Stadium lies dark and dormant in November.

Auburn has not played a big game at home in an even year in November since Cam Newton and company beat Georgia to win the SEC West.  Right now it looks like they never will again thanks to AD Jay Jacobs "helping the conference" so Auburn fans better enjoy these odd years.  I notice there is no way Bama would ever let Auburn and Tennessee be paired together like that on their schedule.  This single act by Jacobs will continue to haunt Auburn football for a long time.  I cannot describe the contempt I have for this buffoon and his continual missteps trying to be an athletic director.  He has proven his continual incompetence over and over again.

Back to this year's schedule... it is decent till mid October.  Auburn plays Georgia Southern, at Clemson, Mercer (homecoming in early September???), at Missouri, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.  This Auburn team should definitely win all those games outside of Clemson.  Auburn just has a lot more talent than all of the other teams and only travels to Missouri.  It will come down to coaching and injuries.  I actually think Auburn has a great chance against Clemson.  Clemson has won three out of the last four games they have played against Auburn and could have won the one in 2010 as well.  Auburn is due to play well against Clemson and Clemson, no matter what they say, is rebuilding after last year's title run and the loss of quarterback DeShaun Watson, the best player in the country last season.

After Ole Miss things get pretty tough as Auburn has to play THREE SEC ROAD GAMES in four weeks.  The Tigers have to play at Arkansas and at LSU BACK TO BACK and then get an open week before going to Texas A&M.  MEANWHILE BAMA DOES NOT PLAY ANY BACK-TO-BACK ROAD GAMES THIS SEASON.  IT IS LITERALLY LIKE BAMA GETS TO MAKE THEIR SCHEDULE AND THEN LETS THE OTHER THIRTEEN TEAMS GET TOGETHER.  It is complete and utter BS but it is one of the secrets to all those "championships".   Bear Bryant ducked Georgia and Florida for years while Auburn had to play both every year.  Bama would not have as many of those so-called championships if they had to play those teams every year.

Auburn should win at Arkansas but I think the Razorbacks will make them pay for it.  A bruised Auburn team will then head to Baton Rouge where history says they will most likely lose.  Auburn has only won three games in that hell hole in over 70 years ('93, '97 and '99).  I read Auburn fan after Auburn fan that think we are just going to go down there and dominate.  They obviously do not know anything about Auburn's history.  The Tigers then head to College Station before returning home to Amen Corner with Louisiana Monroe squeezed between Georgia and Bama.  Auburn should be favored in every game outside of Clemson, LSU and Bama.

All in all it is not a great schedule but it is good enough to still give this team a chance at a championship.  As I mentioned above, Auburn has the right teams at home (Georgia and Bama).  It has the tough games spaced out decently outside going to Arkansas and LSU.  I think the open week is in the best place for this schedule.  It also helps to have Missouri roll on for that one other SEC road game as well as the Mississippi schools to be hitting a dip.  Now the Tigers need those good breaks from around the country and get that lucky bounce of the ball at the right time during the season that every single championship team in the history of sports has gotten.

So after breaking it all down I think everyone can definitely see that Auburn has a great opportunity to compete for a championship this season.  Do I think they will do it?  I am sorry to say that after watching Gus Malzahn coach the last three seasons I have to say that NO I do not.  I think Auburn upsets Clemson and finally beats Georgia but loses to both LSU and Bama.  They could win both of them but Gus Malzahn is just not that good a coach.  I just do not think Auburn can build a championship passing game under him regardless of who is hired.  I guess I will go with 10-2 but my gut says Malzahn will probably blow another one somewhere.  The only thing that makes me stay with 10-2 is how bad the conference is this season.  I hope I am wrong because an opportunity this good will not come around again for several years.
