Again it is not losing these games, pretty much everyone counted these games as losses, but the way the team is playing in these games. We all know Auburn is outmanned but the most concerning thing to pretty much all Auburn fans is they also look incompetent and that is coaching. The bottom line is that so far Alex Golesh has not really done a good job in any area. Everyone is sick and tired of him talking about process and details when his team this year makes the same stupid mistakes over and over again. This team is one of the worst I have ever seen penalty-wise and that is again coaching.
I am seriously starting to doubt Golesh is the guy BUT as I have kept writing he still can meet the goals for this season and still call it a success. The worst is over except for one and it is all there for the taking. Auburn will be the favorite the next three games (or it will be very close in Starkville). Again all Golesh and this Auburn team have to do is beat Arkansas at home next week and State without their starting quarterback in two weeks in Starkville. They do that and they have a winning season which ends Auburn's worst streak. Couple that with the win at Georgia and this would be a successful season.
Auburn would then enter one of the most critical portal and recruiting periods in the history of the school but that is a subject for another day. The only thing the Auburn coaches and players should be focused on is playing a good game against Arkansas. The win is the only thing that matters but a well played game would sure look nice along with that win. Auburn is playing a program in a worse state. I want to be clear, the Arkansas program is the only one in the conference in a worse place than Auburn. Take a look into it, things are bad over there. Auburn should be able to play their game confidently against Arkansas.
Auburn should also be battle hardened after playing three of the best teams in the conference in a row. Arkansas' only conference win is over hapless Vandy and they kept it close against Tennessee at home otherwise they have been blown out by every good team they have played. Missouri put them to the sword this weekend. I believe Arkansas is the only team outside Vandy that Auburn has better personnel than. It is all there for the taking. Auburn simply needs to play a good efficient relatively mistake-free game to get this win I believe. A well-played win in the last home conference game would also go a long way for Golesh.
Again though the history books will only record is it a win or a loss, he just has to get the win regardless of how it looks. He wins and everything is better but if he loses... I honestly think he is done. He will not be fired but if he cannot take what he has got and beat what they got in Jordan Hare he is just not a good coach. Yes I think it is that simple and clear. I compare it to Harsin's first year at South Carolina. Auburn was a better team and had that game which would also have given Auburn a winning season and he managed to lose it. I said in this blog after the game I thought that moment indicated he would not make it at Auburn and that was before things turned bad.
It will just look like a match-up between two bad teams next week to everyone else but for both these programs especially Auburn it will be an extremely big game, one of the biggest in this forlorn series...
